Journey from South to North

"M/S Sarfaq Ittuk" is the greenlandic coastal ship/ferry. "Sinersortaat" in daily speach. It sails from Qaqortoq in south to Ilulissat in north. It goes back and forth all summer. It transports grandparents, students, families and other peoples to confirmations, summervacation, family visits and other fun reason.
One of our collegues who has travelled the journey tells:
” I remember, when I was going home for summervacation to Ilulissat from the trade school in Qaqortoq, we sailed with Sarfaq Ittuk. We were two from Ilulissat in our class, so we travelled together. The sun was shining and the grass was green, when we left Qaqortoq, but when we arrived three days later in Ilulissat it was cold, because the summer had not completely arrived in Ilulissat. It snowed and the wind came from the ice. It was just around the middle of june, where it is still winter/spring in Ilulissat sometimes.
Then again, there are 1300 kilometers (approx. 650 miles) between Qaqortoq and Ilulissat. I think it is rather speciel, how the scenery changes, how the mountain flatten the further north one gets. A clever geologist could probably tell you why.
When you are born and raised in Ilulissat and then leave the city to go to school, you miss the giant icebergs. You don't think about it, until you notice their abcense. I imagine that the feeling is like when someone who grow up around tree comes to Greenland, and notices we have none.
Sure, there is ice in South Greenland too, but in keeping with the trees analogy, the ice are like bushes, compared to the big forrest of ice in Ilulissat. Not entirely the same thing.
When we were sailing towards Ilulissat from Aasiaat, the last stop before Ilulissat, we first noticed the air. The air becomes crisp, you can feel the air from the ice. It is a little cool, and a little crisp. You see small bits of ice and small icebergs in the water, and you can sence the big icebergs in the horizon. We are almost home.”
